The Perfect Day Out

Only a 40 minute drive from Cumberland House, Claremont Landscape Garden in Esher is a green oasis in the heart of Surrey and open daily throughout the year so just perfect for a day out.

Once a Dukes’ retreat and a playground for princesses, Claremont is now owned by the National Trust and it is the perfect place to escape everyday life and enjoy simple pleasures with family and friends.

For almost 300 years Claremont has seen many of the great names in garden history play a part in the creation of the estate. On your visit you can witness how Sir John Vanburgh, ‘Capability’ Brown and William Kent have all added their own particular stamp to the pleasure grounds.

As a child, Queen Victoria lived a secluded life at Kensington Palace, so staying with her Uncle Leopold at Claremont was a rare opportunity to enjoy some freedom.  Today anyone can visit, but in times gone by it was only a playground for the really wealthy and influential.

The beautiful landscaped garden surrounds the serpentine man-made lake and features a large grass amphitheatre and unusual grotto. The Duke of Newcastle had a nine-pins bowling alley and small temple near the top of the amphitheatre which has now been recreated in miniature, so you can continue the tradition by playing your own game when you visit.

Enjoy the amazing views of the Camellia Terrace from the Belvedere Tower, open on selected weekends only but worth the wait. Take advantage of the free guided walks around the garden on the first and third Saturday and last Sunday of the month between April and October, just meet near the entrance kiosk at 2pm to join the walk. Claremont Gardens also host popular events such as trails and evening bat walks.

With their resident chef baking fresh goods every day you really are spoilt for choice in the newly designed café and gift area, so whether it be a quick stop for lunch or a leisurely afternoon tea with delicious cakes it’s also easy to find some great souvenirs to take home.

Claremont Gardens is a garden for all seasons, so if you are a garden lover or you just want to escape from it all and chill out, then you really must put this on your to do list!
